Buckwheat was domesticated in Southeast Asia roughly 6,000 years ago. Buckwheat isn't a grain - it is a 'pseudograin' that comes from a wide-leaved plant. As such, it is not related to wheat and contains no allergenic gluten. Like quinoa, it has some abnormal properties that make it a particularly nutritious food. It is about 16 percent protein by calories, ranking it among the highest protein grains.
